Welcome to the final blog post of this series discussing Diabetes and its effects on the feet. And if you haven’t read Part 1, think of this phrase:

Being Diabetic affects your whole body, including your feet.

We’ve covered some tips in the previous blog post but here is the finale of this information-packed series.

1 Keep Diabetes under control

Probably the number one best way to have happy, healthy Diabetic feet is by following the advice provided by your Doctor/GP (e.g. pharmaceutical) and any other health professional assigned to you. This includes any advice related to medications, dietary advice (if you’ve been assigned a Dietician) and so on. Help reduce the likelihood of further complications occurring by following appropriate advice from your Doctor etc.

2 Wear appropriate footwear

Q Why is it important to wear certain shoes if I’m Diabetic?

A It’s important as a Diabetic to wear appropriate shoes in order to reduce the likelihood of lesions such as ulceration or Fissures occurring. In a previous post discussing footwear, some tips were mentioned.

Here’s a summary of them:

Your shoe needs to have a wide enough, deep enough and long enough toe box

There needs to be support via a lace or a strap

Heel height should be maximum two inches (five cm)

See the post here to find out more on what constitutes good footwear (did you know that certain footwear, regardless of whether there’s Diabetes or not, can alter how the foot operates?).

And that is this month’s series on Diabetes finished, with 2 more good tips on Diabetic foot care. Diabetes is a condition that can be really tough mentally for some people. However, one can still enjoy the wonders of life. I hope the knowledge you’ve learnt this month will help you and anyone you know who is Diabetic.
